Zea is inspired by zeaxanthin, a natural plant pigment found in orange peppers and other colorful fruits and vegetables. In the story, Zea shares her special gift to help someone see more clearly. In the real world, zeaxanthin is found in the macula of the eye, where it helps filter certain wavelengths of light and protect the tissues involved in clear central vision.
That's why scientists have studied zeaxanthin for its role in eye and vision health.
