Every fairy in Harvest Grove has an important job.
Some care for garlic.
Others watch over pumpkins, berries, citrus groves, or plum trees.
Lulu's garden is filled with rows of beautiful spinach plants.
Day after day, she lovingly tends every leaf, making sure her garden grows healthy and green. As evening arrives, she carries her little lantern along the familiar winding paths that lead her home.
It's a journey she's made countless times.
Until one evening...everything looks different.
When the Sun Goes Down
As the last rays of sunlight slip below the horizon, darkness settles over Harvest Grove.
Lulu lifts her lantern, expecting its warm glow to guide her home as always.
But tonight, the light isn't bright enough.
The winding paths seem to disappear into the darkness.
Lulu knows the paths are still there.
She simply can't see them anymore.
Then inspiration strikes.
With a wave of her wand, Lulu shares her own magical gift with the spinach plants she has cared for so faithfully.
One by one, the spinach leaves begin to glow.
Soon the entire garden is softly illuminated, and the hidden paths appear once again.
From that day on, spinach carries Lulu's special gift-a gift people would one day know as lutein.
Why Is Lulu Named Lutein?
Every Harvest Grove fairy is inspired by something real in nature.
Lulu's name comes from lutein, a naturally occurring phytonutrient found in spinach and other leafy green vegetables.
As a clinical nutritionist for more than forty years, I've spent much of my career teaching adults about nutrition and the remarkable compounds found in plants.
Harvest Grove lets me share that same fascination with children in a completely different way.
Instead of beginning with science, every story begins with imagination.
The adventure comes first.
The connection to nature comes afterward.
Why Spinach?
Spinach has earned its reputation as one of nature's most nutritious leafy greens.
It's been grown in gardens and served at family tables for generations.
For Lulu, spinach isn't simply a vegetable.
It's her home.
Every leaf she cares for becomes part of the magical garden she protects.
When she gives her gift to the spinach plants, she isn't changing who they are.
She's sharing a little of her own magic so they can help others for generations to come.
That's a theme you'll discover throughout every Harvest Grove story.
A Different Kind of Fairy Story
Harvest Grove isn't a series of books that teaches nutrition through lessons or lectures.
Children simply enjoy magical adventures filled with fairies, talking animals, gardens, and a little mystery.
Only after the story ends do grown-ups discover that each adventure was inspired by a real phytonutrient found in nature.
Every fairy gives a magical gift to a real plant.
That gift later becomes the name of a real phytonutrient.
It's a playful, imaginative way to connect fantasy with the natural world.
Why Parents Enjoy Harvest Grove Too
Many parents are looking for stories that entertain while quietly encouraging curiosity about the world around us.
Harvest Grove was created with that idea in mind.
Children become absorbed in the adventure.
Parents discover the real inspiration in the note at the back of the book.
It's a simple way to spark conversations about gardens, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and the amazing compounds plants naturally produce.
