The Magic of Pumpkins: An Autumn Adventure in Harvest Grove

There is something about pumpkins that makes autumn feel like autumn.
They appear at farm stands and pumpkin patches, tumble across front porches in every shape and size, and find their way into kitchens for pies, muffins, breads, and other fall favorites. As Halloween approaches, some become jack-o’-lanterns with crooked smiles and glowing faces.
For children, pumpkins can feel almost magical.
And in Harvest Grove, they are.
Pumpkin Season Has Arrived
By October, pumpkin patches are ready for one of the most exciting times of the year-the harvest.
Families wander through rows of vines searching for just the right pumpkin. Some want the biggest one they can carry. Others look for a perfectly round pumpkin to carve. And sometimes the odd, bumpy, crooked ones are the most interesting of all.
Pumpkins have also become one of the unmistakable signs that the seasons are changing. Their brilliant orange color appears alongside falling leaves, cooler days, earlier sunsets, and all the traditions that make autumn special.
But what if something went terribly wrong in the pumpkin patch?
What if those beautiful pumpkins suddenly began cracking, sagging, and falling apart?
That's exactly what happens one autumn day in Harvest Grove.
Meet Alpha & Beta
Alpha and Beta are five-year-old fairy twins who are rarely far apart.
They spend their days playing, exploring, and caring for the pumpkin patches of Harvest Grove. They don't carry magic wands yet. In fact, unlike some of the other fairies in the Grove, the twins don't even know they have a magical gift.
Until the pumpkins begin falling apart.
When Alpha and Beta stop to inspect one of the damaged pumpkins, something extraordinary happens.
A warm golden glow appears beneath their hands.
The pumpkin becomes smooth and firm again.
And for the first time, the twins realize there is something very special about them.
A Little Real Nature Behind the Magic
Like every Harvest Grove adventure, Alpha and Beta's story begins with something real in nature and transforms it into a fairy tale.
The twins are inspired by alpha-carotene and beta-carotene, natural plant compounds found in pumpkins and other orange fruits and vegetables. These carotenoids can be converted by the body into vitamin A, an important nutrient involved in the normal growth and maintenance of skin and other tissues.
That real connection inspired Alpha and Beta's magical ability to help the pumpkins become firm and whole again.
Children don't need a science lesson to enjoy the adventure. To them, Alpha and Beta are simply two little fairies who discover an amazing power just when their pumpkin patch needs them most.
For the grown-ups reading along, however, there's another layer to discover.
That's part of the fun of Harvest Grove.
From Pumpkin Patches to Jack-o'-Lanterns
Pumpkins seem to follow us everywhere during autumn.
We pick them.
We decorate with them.
We carve them for Halloween.
We roast their seeds.
We turn them into soups, breads, pies, cookies, and muffins.
And in Alpha & Beta & the Fruit That Kept Falling Apart, even an ordinary family pumpkin becomes part of the adventure when Grandpa accidentally chooses the wrong pumpkin for his jack-o'-lantern.
That little pumpkin mishap leads Grandma to open a book and tell the story of two young twins who once faced a much bigger pumpkin problem in Harvest Grove.
It's an autumn story wrapped inside an autumn tradition.
Add a Little Harvest Grove Magic to Pumpkin Season
A trip to the pumpkin patch, an afternoon carving jack-o'-lanterns, or a cozy evening baking pumpkin muffins can all become opportunities to share a story together.
This fall, after you've chosen your pumpkins and brought them home, take another trip to a pumpkin patch-this time to the magical one in Harvest Grove.
There you'll meet two little fairies who begin their day as ordinary twins caring for the pumpkins they love.
By the time the adventure is over, Alpha and Beta will never look at their pumpkin patch-or their own hands-the same way again.
Alpha & Beta & the Fruit That Kept Falling Apart is a magical interactive digital adventure for children ages 5-8, written by Aubrie Shannon and published by Harvest Grove Children's Books.
